It has, as mentioned previously, the distinction of being the first wireless integrated home theater system to be THX Certified. As part of the testing procedure, THX places the system in an acoustic chamber to make sure the frequency response of the speakers is uniform at any listening position and that the system is able to output the sound levels needed to fill the room. Measurements are made using standardized test tones as well as movies and other content samples known for demanding soundtracks to make sure the speakers in the system sound natural and unstressed even at higher volume levels.
The THX Reference Level takes into account the ability of the system to drive the speakers without clipping or distorting from any input source. The level can be set differently for each speaker as needed for specific room dimensions and acoustics. Once the levels are set, the main volume control raises and lowers the volume of all the speakers together, while keeping the level relationship between each speaker the same.
The CineHome Pro 5. This means it provides a 5. WiSA technology supports the following capabilities:. Each speaker is powered by a custom-designed Class-D amplifier with a WiSA receiver module so that each speaker just needs AC power to form a connection with the CineHub transmitter. We conducted an informal survey of some of our tech-aware but not necessarily tech-savvy acquaintances, asking if they knew what THX was or what it did.
Because THX works its magic outside of the spotlight, few people understand how or why the company does what it does. Tomlinson Holman, an audio engineer and technical director for Lucasfilm at the time, was assigned the task of making that happen. Holman was apparently dismayed when he surveyed the state of theaters at the time. Images looked shoddy, and the sound was terrible. All the work and money that Hollywood poured into making movies look and sound amazing was being lost — nay, obliterated — in these dilapidated theaters.
Holman set about developing a set of standards that would deal with most of the issues plaguing those aging theaters. In short, anything that could potentially pull a viewer out of the magic of the film needed to be mitigated.
Over the next ten years or so, THX refined its standards to a remarkably granular level — a process that continues to this day — and began folding those standards into its theater certification program. It was writing the handbook on reproduction of video and sound. THX researchers dealt with everything from how many speakers were needed per cubic foot of space to how many degrees Kelvin colors needed to measure in order for a picture to be considered accurate.
Even if you see movies in a non-THX-certified theater today, you still have THX to thank for the quality of picture and sound you experience because the company showed the world just how good the movie experience could be.
Once it had, standards began to skyrocket across the board. From standard's creation up until that point, it was a part of Lucasfilm, the George Lucas-run company behind the Star Wars films. The initial THX specification was generated to ensure that certified cinemas would reproduce the audio track for the initial Star Wars exactly as George Lucas had intended it.
The first two letters stand for Tomlinson Holman, the inventor of the initial standard, while X is for crossover. Be respectful, keep it civil and stay on topic. We delete comments that violate our policy , which we encourage you to read.
