How does unlocking cores work

For a company that sells motherboards, offering a board with more versatility as well as more bells and whistles at the same price level as a competitor's less versatile motherboard will usually mean that the company offering the more versatile board will appear more attractive to the consumer; therefore, attracting said consumer to spend his or her dollars with them instead of their competitor. Asrock isn't the only company to offer a mobo that has a cpu core unlocking feature either, and this feature does work; however, I recommend you read this article before you entertain the idea of doing so: Unlocking CPU Cores.

It isn't that the core unlocking feature is creating a new core on the AMD CPU, but actually unlocking a core that was disabled because a core or cores did not pass a test for some apparant reason Toms Hardware. Yes, it is possible to unlock disabled cores, but it might not be stable. It can be done, but it might or might not be stable. I have never attempted core unlocking; however, I used to be heavy into overclocking.

I have a feeling what holds true for having a system that supports successful overclocking holds true for unlocking cores: finding hardware components that will remain stable with the core unlock. For additional reading, a article I found helpful to get me up to speed on multi-core processors last year.

Hope that helps. Am I going to have to buy a new one to get system stability back I hope not because I have no money left after buying the new PC! Please help me if you can. Regards Richard. Richard75 , Sep 20, Pvfc-Epic , Sep 21, This has happened to several other members here as well as all across the 'net. At times, when the demand is high, they'll also software disable core s to meet the market demand for Tri and Dual cores, but that's much less often. Looks like you've got at least 1 unstable core, which means that you're stuck with a Tri or a Dual core.

Just because it's stable in Windows doesn't mean that all it's cores are stable. Running a stress test like Prime95 on all cores for at least 10 hours will show you which core s are borked.

Anyway, it's all a gamble when you buy into the hype of purchasing a dual and hoping to have a quad. Psychlone , Sep 22, I found a similar issue with my current m4n82 deluxe. Even disabling nvcc in bios did not remove the 2 extra flawed cores. Search titles only. Search Advanced search…. Everywhere Threads This forum This thread. Search Advanced…. Log in. Thanks in advance! May 17, 8, 0 34, There is no risk as far as i''m aware of other then the 4th core might not be stable. From what I've read all it does is adjust the fan speed based on voltage. If this is the only benefit, I will pass. My system is fairly quiet already.

It's not going to hurt your system - and it may extend its life. This means it can slow down your fan and still run cool making your CPU cooler and quiter. Try it - if you don't like it you can allways turn it back off in the BIOS. I think you may be confused rrhal. The main point of core unlocking is taking a chip sold as an x3 or x2 and enabling the remaining cores.

The cores that were turned off may be problematic or they may work fine. There's no way of knowing whether the cores were locked for marketing reasons selling cheaper CPUs or if the deactivated cores were completely non-functional or didn't bin at the same spec as the other cores.

For the x6 CPUs, those are a new core with 6 cores on them. You can't 'unlock' any additional cores since they aren't there.
